Kujenga - the Swahili word for ‘build’- is a seven-piece Black improvised music outfit based in Cape Town. Their name symbolises what the group believes to be their creative calling; to build connections with each and every listener through their works and live experiences. Kujenga draws from the rich legacy of Black band music in South Africa, representing the present and future of this historic sound. The band consists of Zwide Ndwandwe on bass, his twin brother Owethu Ndwandwe on piano, Thane Smith on electric guitar, Skhumbuzo Qamata on drums, Bonga Mosola on trumpet, Matthew Rightford on tenor sax and Tamzyn Freeks on trombone. Kujenga has played across South Africa at events such as uManyano Lwe Jazz festival in Joburg, Cape Town Jazzathon and more. Kujenga released their debut album nationally in 2019, and are set to release their second offering, ‘In The Wake’. Super excited to welcome them and have some big band energy back at Search!
